Using a DSL line and an Internal ModemI have installed DSL in many locations and many of them still are able to use their internal modem.
Do not confuse a DSL modem
with an internal fax modem, they are not the same.
Let me explain:
When you get DSL you can
use the DSL modem to get to the Internet but you can also use your regular
telephone at the same time on the same telephone line. In a very
simplistic explanation they are using one telephone line to send you two
signals. One signal is for DSL and then a filter is used to
separate the DSL from normal telephone signal so you can talk on the same
telephone line. When you got your DSL hookup kit it came with five DSL
filters and a telephone line splitter (one connection in two connections out).
If you read the instructions provided by Verizon you must put a filter on
every regular telephone you use.
This is what you do with
the splitter:
Plug the splitter into the
DSL wall plate, (see walljack1.jpg) from one of the out connections you
go to the DSL modem. From the other out connection you plug in a filter
then run a standard telephone cable from the filter to your internal computer
modem. Everything will work as before. The attached diagram
(DSL-hookup.jpg) uses a regular desktop computer but it is the same hookup as
a laptop.
