You can directly connect 4 PC's to the above router and with an uplink connection this router can support up to 253 users.

WAN - Wide Area Network - This goes to the Cable modem Ethernet connection.

# 1 - Goes to your computer Ethernet connection.

#'s 2 thru 4 go to additional computers if you have them.

Uplink goes to another Hub (Switch) if you have more than 4 computers.

The following procedure is the same for DSL or cable:

  • Run the software CD from your cable or DSL provider.

At this point what is happening is the Linksys software is analyzing your computer so all the proper files are run and the Linksys is configured properly for your cable or DSL company.  That's why the connection is still between your PC and the Cable or DSL modem.

  • Now start the install CD that came with the Linksys router.

The on screen instructions will now tell you to unplug the cable end that goes to the Ethernet connection on your cable or DSL modem (this cable comes from the network card on your PC to the cable modem).  Plug it into Port #1 on the Linksys router.  Now use the short blue network cable supplied with the Linksys.  This cable will now go from the Ethernet connection of your cable modem to the WAN connection of the Linksys.

At this point you now have now installed a hardware firewall between your cable modem and your PC.

Note: Rather than update this story when using a Wireless router and the new brand of combination modem / router products now being used.  I can safely state every one I have installed were basically the same as above.  They all (cable or DSL) come with explicit instructions, sound and pictures.  Just put in the CD, turn up the sound and follow instructions.
